This interdisciplinary unit on World War II is supported by footage from the award winning PBS documentary The Invisible Soldiers: Unheard Voices and the film African Americans in World War II: A Legacy of Patriotism and Valor. Each unit of the curriculum is accompanied by a short 7 to 12 minutes video clip from one of the films. The film clips are on DVD. The curriculum units are for grades 7 through 12 and involve math, history and social studies.

Description

This curriculum guide to be used in conjunction with the documentary film “African Americans in World War II: A Legacy of Patriotism and Valor,” focuses on the two challenges confronting African Americans before and during the war: 1) gaining full and equal participation within the armed services; and 2) winning the struggle against racial segregation at home. The general themes surrounding these challenges are touched upon as points of focus as well.

Understanding social and historical evolution is fundamental to very concept of education. Knowledge of these principles gives students perspective on the world which surrounds, informs, supports and challenges them.
